Sad peak values: this is how bad health is during the holidays
Spending Christmas in hospital is a nightmare. But it is a reality for every second infant currently suffering from an RSV infection. According to the RKI's 50th calendar week report, more and more people over the age of 80 are now having to be treated as inpatients.
The number of infections and visits to the doctor fell compared to the previous week. Nevertheless, they are still in the range of the peak values of severe flu epidemics.
"A total of 272 (82%) of the 332 sentinel samples submitted were identified as respiratory viruses, including 182 (55%) samples with influenza viruses, 49 (15%) with respiratory syncytial viruses (RSV), 26 (8 %) with human seasonal coronaviruses (hCoV), 19 (6 %) with rhinoviruses, 17 (5 %) with SARS-CoV-2, six (2 %) with human metapneumoviruses (hMPV) and four (1 %) with parainfluenza viruses (PIV)," the RKI weekly report states.
For many weeks, the number of infections has been "at a high level, initially still strongly influenced by the circulation of SARS-CoV-2, then by the early and strong increase in RSV activity and now mainly caused by the influenza virus circulation", according to the RKI. In many places, hospitals are already at their limits due to the large number of children requiring treatment. Read more about this.
Politicians such as Janosch Dahmen, spokesperson for the Green Party's health policy, are once again advising the population to protect themselves more. With masks, for example. But how can you protect yourself, your family and your fellow human beings from infection?
