What is the difference between a wound plaster and rapid wound dressings?

Both the wound plaster and the wound dressing are used for wound management of various injuries. However, there are a few differences, primarily in terms of shape and size. The wound healing plasters consist of an absorbent pad surrounded by the two adhesive strips and come in a ready-made form. This means that they are usually just stuck on and do not need to be cut to size. This is the case with quick wound dressings, which can be cut to size depending on the size and shape of the wound. Both types are ideal for small cuts or abrasions, minor burns or blisters. The quick wound dressing can also be applied to complex-shaped wounds or adhere to areas where there is a lot of movement.

Discover many more advantages with these medical plasters:

  • Wound plasters protect open wounds from external influences such as dirt and bacteria.
  • They offer a better moisture balance.
  • Wound plasters are flexible and comfortable to wear.
  • Application and removal is simple.
  • The plasters are breathable.
  • Many of our wound plasters are also waterproof.
  • They are available in many sizes and shapes.

The different areas of application

Wound plasters are primarily used for the initial treatment of wounds such as cuts, abrasions and minor burns. However, they can also keep ointments and creams applied to the wound and prevent them from smearing on clothing. Injection plasters are also available for use in medical practices and can be used after vaccinations.

  • MaiMed® porefix transparent sterile quick wound dressing: Similar to the other sterile plasters, this one is also particularly suitable for post-operative wounds, is resistant to secretions and latex-free. • Cederroth Salvequick plastic plaster: Thanks to its plastic coating, this wound plaster is waterproof and therefore particularly suitable for everyday use. It also adheres securely for a long time and comes in two different sizes in the pack: 27 pieces in the 72×19 mm size and 18 pieces in the 72×25 mm size.

How to apply and change your wound plaster correctly

Before you apply your wound healing plaster to the wound, it and the surrounding skin must be thoroughly cleaned using disinfectants such as a skin antiseptic. Then remove the protective film from your plaster and leave the sterile pad untouched. Carefully place the plaster over the injury and smooth the edges. Use a quick wound dressing, cut off the required length, place the pad on the wound and secure the dressing with the adhesive ends.

Depending on the type of wound and the condition of the plaster, these need to be changed at different intervals. If your plaster is soaked or dirty, it must be changed. Otherwise, wounds that bleed more can benefit from daily reapplication; for other injuries, it is sufficient to change the plaster every two or three days.
