Protective clothing

Protective clothing protects the wearer from various factors, such as contamination with pathogens or chemicals, soiling or similar.

In certain situations, such as in healthcare, laboratories or other areas, the wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. Read more about this here. This protective equipment is intended to protect the person wearing it during potentially hazardous activities.

Disposable gloves

Disposable gloves are available for various areas of application, such as healthcare, catering, laboratories or industry. They are also available in different materials, such as nitrile, latex or vinyl. There are three different categories of protective gloves, depending on the risk requirements. Category III gloves are required for high risks, for example. This includes chemical protective gloves, for example. Chemical protective gloves are also divided into three different types, depending on their resistance to chemicals.

You can find more detailed information on disposable gloves here.

Protective gown

Protective clothing in the healthcare sector offers the wearer reliable protection against pathogens or droplets and splashes. In addition to protective masks (link) and protective gloves (link), this clothing also includes protective clothing that covers larger parts of the body, such as protective gowns or overalls.

There are different types of gowns with different purposes in different areas. These include visitor gowns, infection control gowns or isolation gowns, protective coveralls, aprons or protective gowns.

Protective gowns are one of the most frequently used pieces of protective equipment in clinical practice. They are used to prevent contamination of the work clothing of employees in the healthcare sector or the normal clothing of guests with infectious agents, for example. Protective gowns for medical use should be CE-certified and listed as a medical device or protective clothing under standard 14126.

The gowns are available in various materials such as PP, PE, SMS, fleece or cotton.

When working with hazardous substances, the employer is obliged to provide employees with protective clothing in accordance with PPE category III. Chemical protective clothing (CS clothing) is intended to protect the wearer against fatal hazards or serious irreversible damage to health. This clothing is designated as type 1 to type 6 according to the European standards and test requirements.

Further information on protective gowns and co. can be found here.

Masks

Protective masks are also part of protective clothing. There are two different types of masks: mouth-nose protection (MNS) or medical protective masks and respiratory masks.

Mouth and nose protection/medical protective masks

They are part of protective clothing and protect the wearer from droplets: medical face masks, also known as mouth-nose protection (MNS). So-called surgical masks, or medical face masks, were used by doctors and dentists in the past. They are intended to protect against droplets that occur when speaking, for example. However, surgical masks offer no protection against aerosols and therefore only provide a certain degree of self-protection. These masks are divided into three different types, depending on their filtration effect.

Respiratory masks

FFP2 masks, or respirators, on the other hand, offer significantly higher protection against aerosols, smoke, pollen or fine dust in the air we breathe. They are particularly recommended to protect against corona infections. This type of protective mask fulfills the test requirement according to FFP2 masks protect both the wearer and the environment and meet the test requirements of EN 149 (EN 14683). Respiratory masks are part of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Hoods

Hoods for head and hair are used particularly in healthcare, laboratories, the food industry, cleaning and industry. On the one hand, they protect hair and scalp from microorganisms. On the other hand, they protect the environment from contamination by hair or dander.

Here, too, there are various types of hoods, such as clip-on or barrette hoods, some of which are also suitable for the operating theater.
