Buying a face mask: What to look out for
1. mouth and nose protection/medical protective masks
They are part of protective clothing and protect the wearer from droplets: medical face masks, also known as mouth-nose protection (MNS). So-called surgical masks, or medical face masks, were used by doctors and dentists in the past. They are intended to protect against droplets that occur when speaking, for example. However, surgical masks offer no protection against aerosols and therefore only provide a certain degree of self-protection. The wearer's surroundings, on the other hand, are protected and this type of face mask meets the EN 14683 test requirement.
In general, medical face masks or Masks are divided into three types, depending on the filtration effect: Type I, Type II and Type IIR masks. Type 1 masks have medical approval in accordance with EN 14683:2019-6. However, they only have a bacterial filtration efficiency of 95%, lower than type 2 masks. They are suitable in epidemic or pandemic situations. Type II masks have a bacterial filtration efficiency of 98%. They are therefore suitable for healthcare professionals, for example in operating theaters or other facilities. Type 2 is subdivided on the basis of the mask's resistance to liquids. Type IIR masks are liquid-resistant with high splash resistance.
2. types
3 types of mouth-nose protection, depending on the filtration effect
Type I: Medical approval according to EN 14683:2019-6, bacterial filter performance of 95%, suitable in epidemic or pandemic situations
Type II masks: bacterial filtration efficiency of 98%, suitable for healthcare professionals, resistant to liquids
Type IIR masks: liquid-resistant with high splash resistance
In the European Union, such mouth and nose protectors in risk class I in accordance with the Medical Device Directive (93/42/EEC, MDD) must comply with EN 14683:2019-6 and also have a CE marking.
3. breathing masks
FFP2 masks, or respirators, on the other hand, offer significantly higher protection against aerosols, smoke, pollen or fine dust in the air we breathe. They are particularly recommended to protect against corona infections. This type of protective mask meets the testing requirements of EN 14683. FFP2 masks protect both the wearer and the environment and meet the testing requirements of EN 149 (EN 14683). FFP2 or FFP3 masks with a valve, on the other hand, only protect the wearer and meet the testing requirements of EN 149.
Respiratory masks are part of the personal protective equipment (PPE) that is required by law for self-protection when working with potentially hazardous activities. For example, FFP2 or FFP3 masks (without a valve) are used in areas with protection level 2 or 3 in the healthcare sector or laboratories.
Respiratory masks, such as surgical masks or FFP2 masks, are worn over the mouth and nose. Care should be taken to wear them correctly (over the mouth and nose, edges should be flush with the skin and leave no gaps) to ensure effective protection. For hygienic reasons, the masks must be replaced regularly. The masks are therefore disposable products.
As the name suggests, respiratory masks are used to protect yourself and others from infection, for example from coronavirus or the flu. They are also used as a hygiene measure in the medical field. The masks are therefore suitable for clinics, doctors' surgeries, nursing homes, healthcare professions and test centers.
